Department Profile


The Department of chemistry was established in 1952 with BSc Chemistry course. The eminence who steered the department in the early years was late Prof K.C Papoo and late Prof C.K Mathew. BSc polymer chemistry course was started in1993 and MSc Chemistry in 1995. The DST-FIST supported department was recognized as a research Centre of University of Kerala in 2013.The vision of the department is to mould the students by providing quality education of global competence and value based growth so that they could become world class competitors and socially responsible citizens. The department has a ‘Chemistry Anthem’ which is a reminder of the team effort of the department.

The Chemistry Forum

The Chemistry Forum is a special body comprising of students and faculty members of the Department. The objective of the forum is to develop the academic and cultural talents of the students, improving their capabilities to work as a team raising their level of self confidence in interacting with fellow students and peers.

  1. The Head of the Department and Second Year UG Class Teacher are the coordinators of the Chemistry forum
  2. The Forum secretary is elected from the Executive Committee constituting class representatives from UG and PG.
  3. Periodic executive meetings are held before conducting any programme
  4. Forum Inauguration is conducted at the beginning of the Academic year. The special feature of the programme is a motivational talk by an eminent personality which includes former faculty or alumni.
  5. A unique feature of the department, “Chemistry Anthem” – a call for unity, is played at the end of every programme conducted by the Forum.
  6. The regular programmes conducted by the Forum during an academic year are:
  1. Lecture Competion – To identify “Professors of the Future”
  2. Intra- Departmental Chemistry Quiz Competition conducted by Second PG Students.
  3. Inter- Departmental Quiz Competition.
  4. Cultural Fest – A Home Platform to Exhibit their cultural talents (Songs, Dance, Mono Act, Recitation etc.)
  5. Onam and Christmas Celebrations – The Forum takes initiatives to make sure the participation of students in the Onam and Christmas Celebrations conducted by the college every year.
